Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (1899-1980) was born to Roman Catholic tradesmen parents in the waning years of Queen Victoria's long reign. He was a strange studious boy who avoided sport and physical activity. Instead, he immersed himself in literature, film and art. He became an employee at Gaumont film studios and learned his craft. There he met Alma Revile a film editor. The two married and remained together until Hitch's death in 1980. Hitch had one daughter Pat who appeared in Strangers on a Train and Psycho in a supporting role. Hitch made his fame with such thrillers in England as Murder1; The Lodger (influenced by German expressionism); Strangers on a Train and the Thirty Nine Steps. He came to Hollywood and directed Rebecca for David O. Selznick in 1939. The great films followed and included North by Northwest; The Man Who Knew too Much; Rear Window; Notorious; Spellbound; To Catch a Thief; Vertigo ; Family Plot and many others. He never won an Oscar as Best Director. Hitch was known for the role of suspense in film. He stared in Alfred Hitchcock Presents on American television. Hitch was a person trapped in a fat body who fell in love with leading ladies such as Ingrid Bergman ; Grace Kelly and Tippi Hedren his star in The Birds and Marnie. He was complicated, funny, dark and a genius. Donald Spoto's biography on Hitch is excellent. Well recommended.
